The Dance Company

Fox Broadcasting Company's popular television show "So You Think You Can Dance" has shined the spotlight on all genres of dance. Its popularity has gotten kids active and even inspired couples to spice things up with salsa lessons.

The Dance Company, at 2121 East 2100 South, is a professional studio offering technical training in dance. It lets dance and your passion for it become more than just a spectator sport. The Dance Company offers lessons for all ages and levels in ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop and creative dance.

Owner Dixie Clegg says with the help of her four daughters Andrea, Heidi, Kimberly and Melanie, The Dance Company continues to be a very successful and disciplined dance studio.

"We are a family run studio and we work really well together," Dixie says. "We are also very fussy on making sure that things are appropriate, both with dance choreography and costumes."

Her daughter Andrea says having age appropriate music, themes and modest costumes and uniforms really sets their studio apart from others.

"We feel too often we see young children performing too sexy with songs that don't fit with that age group," Andrea says.

At The Dance Company, parents can be assured their child will get experience in performing but above all, superior technical training. Dixie takes pride in having a staff of top-notch instructors, all with amazing dance resumes. However, for Dixie that's not enough -- they all have to know how to teach the dance moves to the students.

"We are very particular with our teachers and only hire those who have danced professionally, have a dance degree or have taught dance for a number of years," Andrea says.

The Dance Company is now signing up students for its summer programs called Summer Spotlight of Dance. Students get to learn all forms of dance in the four -week period. Dixie says a classical ballerina used to being graceful on her toes can now learn how to get down with hip-hop moves.

"It gives dancers an opportunity to try different genres of dance which is important," Dixie says. "Right now in the dance world, it's becoming so you have to be versatile and be good in all the styles of dance."

The Summer Spotlight of Dance also includes Dance Essentials which teaches about stage makeup, how to audition, dance terminology and choreography. Dancers will participate in classes based on age and skill level. There are even classes for toddlers, some as young as 18 months.

Dixie says the summer program is a great way for kids to stay active both physically and mentally.

"Students work hard in every class and learn discipline," she says. "As they think and move at the same time, they are getting a whole different type of brain exercise."
