Upland Terrace students perform at Walk of Faith dedication
Leaders of 10 faiths came together on June 29 for the dedication of the Walk of Faith and Garden Place at This is the Place Heritage Park. Nearly 40 students from Upland Terrace had the opportunity to be part of that dedication.
The event was held in the new Garden Place, a large multi-use event center built to accommodate large gatherings and special activities at the park year round.
Under the direction of Ann Jensen, a fourth grade teacher at Upland Terrace, the group sang “Utah…This is the Place,” the official song of the State of Utah. The students began the number playing the melody of the song, each with their own harmonica.
Catholic Bishop John Wester dedicated the Walk, Lt. Gov. Greg Bell and Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter -day Saints also spoke to the crowd of nearly 400.
“This is the Place Heritage Park belongs to everybody; it belongs to all faiths, it belongs to all cultures,” Ballard said.
Along the path leading up to the Garden Place is the Walk of Faiths. The nine monuments pay tribute to pioneers of these faiths: Catholic, Jewish, First Congregational, Episcopal, First United Methodist, First Baptist, First Presbyterian, Zion Evangelical Lutheran and Greek Orthodox. Each monument tells a story of those who pioneered each faith in Utah.
In his dedicatory prayer, Wester prayed that the new building and the Walk of Faiths would “stand as a monument to our commitment to love and support one another.”
Upland Terrace was named a National Blue Ribbon School this year by the Department of Education. The performing students wore red bandanas and blue t-shirts commemorating the honor.
The construction of the Garden Place and the Walk of Pioneer Faiths was funded entirely by private donations.
