218 days ago352 views

The first production of the year at Olympus High School is sure to make us smile. The school will present the musical classic “Annie Jr.” Oct. 13-19.

“Annie” is a Broadway musical based upon the popular Harold Gray 1930s comic strip “Little Orphan Annie.” The original production opened on Broadway in 1977 and ran for six years, winning a Tony award for Best Musical. The show features such favorites as “Tomorrow” and “It’s A Hard Knock Life.”

“Annie Jr.” is an edited and shortened version of the original play specially licensed for younger performers. While it is a shortened production, all of the favorite songs in their full orchestrated version are part of this production.

The Olympus production will feature senior Amy Funk as the young spunky redhead Annie. Greg Watts, also a senior, plays billionaire businessman Oliver or “Daddy” Warbucks. The alcoholic orphanage matron Miss Hannigan will be played by senior Lexi Jones and senior Jessica Smith will play Warbucks’ faithful secretary.

In all, nearly 60 students are part of the show. Drama teacher Robin Edwards will direct the production. Assisting her is orchestra director Vicky Belnap.

“Annie Jr.” will run every night at 7.p.m. beginning Thursday, Oct 13 through Wednesday, Oct 19, with the exception of Sunday. Tickets are available for $8 online at Olympus High’s website: http://olympushigh.wikispaces.com, or at the door one hour prior to the performance for $9. Olympus High School is located at 4055 South 2300 East.
