Skyline football coach Roger Dupaix racked up his 300th career victory Oct. 7 as the Eagles defeated Westlake 24-6. The win continued Skyline’s four-game winning streak in region play and an overall 6-2 record for the year.

Skyline struggled in the preseason, losing 33-14 to Hurricane Aug. 19 and 13-7 to Syracuse Aug. 26, but since then have been able to pull out wins—some tougher to get than others. The Eagles squeaked out a 21-20 win over Cedar Sept. 2; then dominated Juan Diego 27-7 Sept. 8 and shut out Murray 45-0 Sept. 16. Skyline captured a close 27-26 win over Herriman Sept. 23 with a more comfortable victory 44-13 against Hillcrest Sept. 30.

“It’s exciting,” Dupaix said. “We started off with a young team, not a lot of experience, but the youngsters are doing very well.”

The seniors are hitting it hard for the Eagles this year, including Zach Williams at quarterback and Dylan Daugherty who has accumulated 369 yards in rushing and seven touchdowns so far in the season, and is averaging over eight yards a carry. Fullback Maurice Mapps has eight TDs and 404 yards rushing.

“Brandon Shingleton is an anchor for us on defense,” Dupaix said. Shingleton currently leads the team in sacks (2) and tackles (41.) Senior captain Zach Russon is at center and Jake Wyckoff and Izic Yappias are covering kicking.

“Austin Harrison is coming of an injury, and has become a real force,” Dupaix said. “It has really helped to get him back. These seniors are taking control, leading by example and work ethic. I am happy with the team and how they have progressed. I am real proud of them. They are playing good football.”

Skyline will end its season with a showdown against arch rival Olympus Oct. 14. The Titans were also undefeated in region going into the game, with a 7-1 overall record for the year.

“We just can’t get complacent or lazy. We have to keep after it and focused. Our goal is to win the region championship, Dupaix said before the game.

State 4A playoff games begin Oct. 28-29 and Nov. 4-5 at home fields, with the semi finals Nov. 10 and the final game Nov. 18, both at the University of Utah.
