
Skyline girls cross country takes third at state
The Lady Eagles of Skyline were so close to bringing home the silver trophy from the state 4A cross country championships this year. They missed by a single point of finishing second, settling for third place during the races, held Oct. 19 at Sugar House Park.
Skyline finished with 93 points in the low-score-wins competition, while Timpview was at 92. Mountain View took the gold trophy and state title with 76 points.
Three Skyline runners finished in the top 10 to earn All-State honors.
Senior Jacqueline Winterton led the way with a seventh-place finish at 18:33.2. Sophomores Jeni Townsend (eighth, 18:38.5) and Caroline Weiler (ninth, 18:40.8) were close behind. The other two “scored” runners for the Eagles were sophomore Lauren Monson in 23rd place at 19:56.0; and junior Anne Glenn in 48th place at 20:35.4. The course was three miles in length and wound through the park before finishing on the track at Highland High School.
Skyline’s boys team took 14th place with a total of 346 points. Mountain View also won the team title in this division, with 66 points. Sophomore Jack Evans was the top Eagles’ finisher, taking 45th place at 17:01.2. Other Skyline runners who scored were junior Christian Sorensen, 56th at 17:12.3; junior Jess Clapier in 84th at 17:44.4; sophomore Nicolo Young in 95th at 17:54.3; and sophomore Josh Boyden in 99th at 17:58.5.
Olympus did not have any qualifying runners for the state championships this year.
