Luminaries to light up holiday season at Wasatch Lawn
Wasatch Lawn Mortuary will host its eighth annual luminary display Dec. 17 from 5 to 8 p.m. The display will include 10,000 luminaries lit by tea candles throughout the cemetery, located at 3401 Highland Drive.
The display is set up each year by hundreds of volunteers who set the bags out. This year, the display will use tea candles instead of wick candles. This will cut down on the amount of time spent setting up the display.
“We usually start in October getting the luminaries ready. We have volunteers from the community, families who come back every year or service groups who help get the luminaries set up. Usually, we have a group go out and place the luminaries, and then a second group goes out and lights the candles. This year we are using tea lights so they’ll just light them when they set the luminaries out,” Shawna McCulley, who is responsible for this year’s display, said
Visitors can also stop by the mortuary for refreshments and live music that evening. Live violin, piano and harp music will be played throughout the evening. A memory tree will also be on display. You can bring your own ornament or make an ornament with supplies provided at the mortuary. The ornaments are displayed on the tree in memory of a loved one who has passed away.
Visitors are invited to stop by anytime during the evening to listen to the music and view the luminaries.
