Wasatch Junior High students aim to bring holiday cheer
A group of students at Woodrow Wilson Elementary are in for a treat. For several weeks now, the student body Officers and cheerleaders at Wasatch Junior High have been collecting fleece and picture books. The fleece will be cut in lengths of one and one-half yards and fringed to make cozy blankets for all of the second grade students.
“In previous years, we have just given blankets, but this year we have decided to step it up a little and give them books too,” Wasatch student body officer Sara Nichols said. “Since they are a Title 1 school many of their parents don’t have much to give them for Christmas.”
In Title 1 schools, at least 40 percent or more of the student body is from low income families.
The Wasatch students are trying to collect enough fleece and picture books to give one of each to the nearly 100 second graders that attend Woodrow Wilson.
But there is more. On Dec. 14, the junior high students will put on a small carnival for the elementary children. For two hours the young students will be able to rotate through several stations where they can decorate cookies and enjoy games such as Hacky Sack Toss. A visit from Santa himself is also in the works. At the end of the carnival, the students will be given their books and blankets.
Woodrow Wilson Elementary is a very culturally diverse Title 1 school. The student body is comprised of refugees and students from more than 25 countries. Woodrow Wilson is in the Granite School District and is located at 2567 South Main.
