Salt Lake Valley Spelling Bee
Spelling Bee Details & Schedule Sponsorship

The Valley Journals to sponsor spelling bee

Get your school involved now

The Valley Journals has kicked off an exciting new education partnership with local schools. It will sponsor the Scripps National Spelling Bee regional competition for Salt Lake County.

A nationally-renowned program, the spelling bee is the nation’s largest and longest-running educational program, administered on a not-for-profit basis by The E.W. Scripps Company and sponsors in the U.S., American Samoa, Canada, Canada, China, Europe, Ghana, Guam, Jamaica, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, South Korea, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

"I was approached by a couple of schools asking if we would sponsor the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the Salt Lake Valley. They felt that Salt Lake Valley should be represented in this national spelling bee," said Valley Journals publisher Boyd Petersen.

"It has been a shame that we have not had the spelling bee in Salt Lake Valley for eight years now. I did not realize it was no longer being held until I received those calls," said Petersen. "The Journals are all about reading and better education of our children. We think this is going to be a great partnership."

The spelling bee had been held in Salt Lake for many years but was discontinued a few years ago when budget cuts hit the company that was sponsoring the event.

The Salt Lake Valley Spelling Bee is open to all fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students.

Letters have been sent out to all area schools (including charter and private schools) and home schooling associations inviting them to participate. Contact your local school directly to see if they are going to do so.

Scripps requires a participation fee of $99 for each school which can be funded by sponsors.

Entry forms must be received by Dec. 19 and all individual school spelling bees must be completed and winners’ names submitted by Jan. 30.

A special home schoolers’ spelling bee will be sponsored by The Valley Journals and will be held Jan. 28 if there are more than 10 students who would like to participate.

In February an article (with photos) honoring all winners will run in all Journals.

The regional competition will take place March 14 at the Salt Lake Community College Larry H. Miller campus, 9550 South 400 West, in Sandy. The winner will be recognized in an article in all Journals following the competition.

The winner of the regional competition will receive an all-expense paid trip for two to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. May 26-27. He or she will also receive a $1,000 scholarship and other prizes.

"We want to see the next national winner come from the Salt Lake Valley! We want to see us continue this tradition for many years to come. We hope to have 200+ participants from the Salt Lake County schools," Petersen said.
